Demi Lovato Doesn’t Want Her Mental Illness to Define Her

Although she suffers from a bipolar disorder, she says, “it’s not who I am”

Demi Lovato has been very open with her fans about her struggles with mental illness.

The 24-year-old singer once didn’t believe she would even live beyond the age of 21, after battling bulimia, depression and drug abuse.

In 2008, when Lovato was only 16 years old, she very suddenly rose to fame with her lead role in Disney Channel’s ‘Camp Rock’.

The star continued to book acting roles and signed a record deal, but on the inside, life was not as glamorous as it appeared to her fans.

In 2011 Lovato entered rehab to prevent further self-harm and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Lovato has since then taken a clean path to recovery and isn’t shy about sharing details with her fans.

She believes that it’s important to be vocal about her struggles and implements this honesty in her music.

She also shares body-positive images on Instagram to explain that while she isn’t perfect, part of her recovery is learning to love herself as she is.

Now, Lovato just asks of her fans not to define her by her mental illness.

Bipolar disorder is something she has, it’s not who she is.
