Not enough women with the disorder are receiving treatment
The Motherhood Center of New York is the first of its kind in the US.
It provides classes, counseling, day programs and support groups to mothers going through postpartum depression.
The co-founder of the center realized the critical need for such services after she herself went through postpartum depression, reaching the point at which she even considered suicide.
The biggest problem is that most women are afraid to share their thoughts, feelings, and concerns.
They deal with their anxiety alone, and don’t realize how normal it is and how they can seek consolation with professionals who understand these symptoms.
Becoming a mother is a huge life transformation.
All at once, your body changes, your responsibilities grow, you are more restricted and have more to worry about – and through all of this, you may also have your relationship being tested like a ship in a storm.
It’s important to understand and accept that there is nothing wrong with women who suffer postpartum depression – it is a treatable disorder that can happen to anyone, and no mother should be judged for it.
Instead, it should be discussed, understood and treated with loving and caring support.
