  1.      Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman led the famous “Underground Railroad” which led African American slaves from the South into the North of the country to obtain freedom in the 1850s. Born as a slave in Maryland, Harriet escaped from slavery after many years of harsh abuse yet returned at least 19 times to retrieve family and hundreds of other slaves, risking her own life in the process.
